This simple procedure is performed in our clinic and does not require sedation. It involves introducing sperm into the uterus using a thin cannula. Before the procedure, the sperm sample is processed in our andrology laboratory to ensure optimal quality, maximizing the chances of success.

The sperm used can come either from your partner or from a donor, depending on your specific needs.

Rest and monitoring

The patient rests for a few minutes in the clinic to increase the possibility of success and after being discharged, we wait a few days to perform the pregnancy test. If the result is positive, we will carry out a gestational follow-up until our team considers it is time to refer the patient to her gynecologist for further pregnancy monitoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is artificial insemination?

Artificial insemination is an assisted reproduction procedure that involves placing the sperm directly into the woman's uterus to facilitate fertilization.

How is Sperm Prepared for Artificial Insemination?

Preparing the sperm is a crucial step to maximize the chances of success. Here’s a breakdown of the key steps involved:

- Semen Collection: The sperm is collected through masturbation in a comfortable and private setting.
- Liquefaction: The semen is allowed to rest to become more fluid, making it easier to handle.
- Semen Washing: The seminal plasma and unwanted substances are removed using techniques like centrifugation or swim-up, selecting the healthiest sperm.
- Evaluation: The concentration, motility, and morphology of the sperm are assessed to ensure they meet quality standards.
Capacitation: This step simulates the natural process that prepares sperm to fertilize an egg.
- Insemination: The prepared sperm is then introduced into the uterus or near the cervix.

This thorough process aims to enhance sperm quality and increase the likelihood of fertilization.

What Are the Success Rates of Artificial Insemination?

The success rates of artificial insemination (AI) can vary widely and depend on several factors, including the age of the woman, the quality of the sperm, the cause of infertility, and the number of treatment cycles undertaken. It’s essential to remember that each situation is unique.

How Many Cycles of Artificial Insemination Are Recommended?

Typically, it is recommended to try between 3 and 6 cycles of intrauterine insemination (IUI) before exploring other options, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF). However, this can depend on factors like the woman's age and the underlying cause of infertility.

Is Artificial Insemination Painful?

Artificial insemination, particularly intrauterine insemination (IUI), usually is not painful for most women. Some may experience mild cramping, similar to menstrual cramps, but this is typically temporary and resolves quickly.

What Should I Do After Artificial Insemination?

After the procedure, here are some tips to keep in mind:

- Rest Briefly: Take a few minutes to relax after the procedure.
- Avoid Intensive Exercise: Opt for light activities during the first few days.
- Maintain a Balanced Diet: Continue taking prenatal supplements and eat healthily.
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water.
- Reduce Stress: Explore relaxation techniques that work for you.
- Consult About Sexual Activity: Check with your doctor regarding when it's safe to resume sexual activity.
- Avoid Douching and Harsh Chemicals: Steer clear of vaginal douches and chemical products post-procedure.

Remember, this journey is about achieving your dream of parenthood, so taking care of yourself is essential. Stay hopeful and nurture your well-being!
