IVF

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is the assisted reproduction treatment that offers the highest success rates for achieving pregnancy. This technique is performed in a laboratory, where the goal is for an egg and sperm to meet in a petri dish and create an embryo.

Fertilization involves an egg and a sperm, which can come from either the couple undergoing treatment or a donor. Egg and sperm donation in IVF is particularly important for heterosexual couples with low-quality eggs or sperm and for women without a male partner.

There are two main types of IVF

fecundacion in vitro FIV clasica

Classic IVF

In classic IVF, fertilization occurs naturally in a petri dish. The embryologist places the egg and a selection of previously prepared sperm in the dish, allowing fertilization to happen spontaneously, similar to what occurs inside a woman’s body.

fecundacion in vitro FIV ICSI

ICSI (Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection)

ICSI is a variation where the embryologist directly fertilizes the egg by microinjecting a selected sperm into it. This method is often used when the sperm quality is not optimal for natural fertilization in the petri dish.

In vitro fertilization is especially indicated in cases where sperm quality is insufficient for spontaneous fertilization.

Embryo Transfer

Once the eggs have been fertilized, the embryos are placed in a culture incubator. Our embryologists carefully monitor them until they reach the blastocyst stage, at which point they are evaluated for transfer to the uterus of the future mother.

This meticulous process is crucial to ensure the best chances of a successful pregnancy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which patients are candidates for IVF?

In Vitro Fertilisation is recommended for couples with unexplained infertility, ovulation problems, fallopian tube damage or blockage, endometriosis, low sperm quality, or after unsuccessful attempts with other assisted reproduction techniques.

How does the process work?

The process involves several phases: ovarian stimulation, egg retrieval, fertilization in the laboratory, embryo culture, and embryo transfer to the uterus.

What preparation is required for IVF?

Women will receive hormonal medication to stimulate the development of multiple eggs. During this time, there will be regular monitoring with ultrasound and blood tests to check the size of the follicles.

Is IVF painful?

Egg retrieval is performed under sedation or mild anesthesia, minimizing pain. Most women experience minor discomfort after the procedure, similar to menstrual cramps.

What is the IVF success rate?

The accumulated pregnancy rate of in vitro fertilization with own eggs in IVF at FIVIR is 81%.
